I have very fond memories of Iceland. A spectacular and beautiful country, with an exciting history dwarfed only by its geography. For a topical example, the Þing, the national forum and democratic parliament goes back to the Dark Ages, and is the etymological root of – among others – WebThing and KaupThing.
The tenth-century Þing famously made the decision to adopt Christianity, for the utterly pragmatic and sensible reason that it had become a prerequisite for trade with Europe. It is indeed sad to see that their present-day successors have jumped on a more problematic bandwagon and come to grief. I wish them all the best with the Russian bailout, or whatever other plans may emerge.
Not that I as a Brit have anything to be smug about either 😦
